On This Rock I Will Build My Church

by JoAnn on Nov.22, 2009, under Reflections

PraiseIt seems to me that many of our Christian Churches are blending in pretty well with the secular world. Many Christians now feel that attending church and belief in God are just small elements among many of a successful life. I fear many consider the church a social club. Is this what Jesus intended for His church?

Actually, Jesus says some pretty radical things about this subject. In Luke 14:33 Jesus makes it pretty plain that we are to pick up our cross and follow Him. In Matthew 6:24 He says we cannot serve both God and money. In fact, we are really not supposed to blend in with the world. John 15:18-19

I can’t help but think, are we missing the point? How did we stray so far out into the weeds? How can we be effective for Jesus when we are just happily blending into the crowd? Christians are Jesus’ church, Peter was the rock on which Jesus built His church.(Matthew 16:18)

You may not agree with everything in the following article and it is certainly not true of all churches, but there are some humbling thoughts here. Go to “The 95 Theses” by Greg Gordon, founder of Sermon Index.

“It is useless for large companies of believers to spend long hours begging God to send revival. Unless we intend to reform we may as well not pray. Unless praying men have the insight and faith to amend their whole way of life to conform to the New Testament pattern there can be no true revival.” – A.W. Tozer
